He wasn't officially adopted as a national symbol until 1961.

Warning, I'm going on a short bandwagon trip here: Uncle Sam is a symbol of this country. You may not like some of the things that our government has or is doing. However, when I see images of Uncle Sam bloody and mutilated, I only think how anti-American that person or people must be. He represents our COUNTRY not our GOVERNMENT. And, just as desecrating a flag shows disdain for this country, so does desecrating Uncle Sam's image. Before you go and make your "free speech" statements by destroying these images, think about what these images represent and how your actions aren't just showing your right to free speech. No, your actions are telling me that you have no respect for this country and you aren't just being UN-American, you are being ANTI-American, and that is so much worse.

Go ahead and have your free speech demonstrations; but remember why you are allowed to have them: you live in the great country called the United States of America!

Patriotic Facts-Statue of Liberty

I am so sorry I was away for a week. Throw that old wives tale out the window:

Also called meat spots. Occasionally found on an egg yolk. Contrary to popular opinion, these tiny spots do not indicate a fertilized egg. Rather, they are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg or by a similar accident in the wall of the oviduct. Less than 1% of all eggs produced have blood spots.

They do try to get them all out:

Mass candling methods reveal most eggs with blood spots and those eggs are removed but, even with electronic spotters, it is impossible to catch all of them. As an egg ages, the yolk takes up water from the albumen to dilute the blood spot so, in actuality, a blood spot indicates that the egg is fresh. Both chemically and nutritionally, these eggs are fit to eat. The spot can be removed with the tip of a knife, if you wish.

Egg Facts-Try it!

Here's a fun thing to try. I just thought they were yellow no matter what. But apparently, since most people prefer that bright yellow color, farmers make sure that they eat plenty of yellow food (corn meal and such). If they were to feed them a colorless meal (white corn meal, for example) the yolk would be white.

I wonder if they put food coloring in the feed if they could make eggs with a whole rainbow of colors. How would that be for Easter? I'm still pondering this one. My cook's daughter had made a comment at the store about brown eggs and not wanting brown eggs and she didn't want eggs that came from a brown chicken...she was trying to be funny.

Her mom laughed at her and said "That's not how they get brown eggs". At this point in the story, I stopped her and said "I think she's right. I'm almost positive I heard that somewhere as a true fact." So, of course I had to look it up. And this is what I found:

The color comes from pigments in the outer layer of the shell and may range in various breeds from white to deep brown. The breed of hen determines the color of the shell. Breeds with white feathers and ear lobes lay white eggs; breeds with red feathers and ear lobes lay brown eggs. White eggs are most in demand among American buyers. In some parts of the country, however, particularly in New England, brown shells are preferred. The Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire and Plymouth Rock are breeds that lay brown eggs. Since brown-egg layers are slightly larger birds and require more food, brown eggs are usually more expensive than white.

So, she was right! The first fact I had only mentioned the ear lobes. I didn't even know chickens had ear lobes! I'll have to check it out.

Egg Facts-Size

After an interesting conversation with my center cook, I decided to look up some facts on eggs. Why then is it called a ten gallon hat
and...
2. Who, in their right mind, has ever tried to measure the liquid holding of a hat and did they drink from it?

While I do know the answer to the first, I am still looking for the answer to the second. The reason it is called a 10 gallon hat is because English speakers messed up once again in translation. The spanish word galon, which means something about braids (something Spanish cowboys wore on their hats) was mis-heard by English speakers as gallon. Therefore, we call it a 10 gallon hat.

Obvious fact

Okay, this isn't really a very interesting fact; but I find I can stump a lot of people when I ask them this question:

How many grooves are on one side of an LP record?

What's fun about it is that it always stumps them! On some cycles it would totally skip our turn (those of us who were turning left). The other cycles it would literally change green and immediately turn yellow then red. So, I found this interesting fact:

An average person spends 2 weeks of his life waiting for a traffic light to change.

So, am I done? (Read more here.) I am always amazed at this time of year, and I learned something very fascinating this week:

When people were crucified back in Jesus' time, they used to break their knees. This made it more difficult to catch a breath (I don't know the logistics of it yet). Anyway, Jesus' legs were never broken. This is important because he was the sacrificial lamb; and any sacrifice had to be unbroken. His legs weren't broken because he had, surprisingly, already died before that time had come. All the more reason to know that he truly is our Savior.

Okay, I did a lousy job of describing it. But here are some better explanations.

Can you figure out why?

Of all the 50 states in the USA, Texas is the only one that allows resident to cast absentee ballots from outer space.

I won't why that is? He was okay, but we definitely weren't a match. We spent the day at an amusement park, which was fun; and ended the day eating at a fine Italian restaurant. I didn't know if he just had no table manners or if, by this time, he was just trying his best to annoy me to the fullest; but when we finished dinner, he actually put his face on the table and wiped his mouth. He didn't even pick the table cloth up to his face, nope. He bent his head down and moved it side to side. After thinking about it, I figured maybe he got this fact all wrong:

Tablecloths were originally meant to be served as towels with which dinner guests could wipe their hands and faces after eating

I mean, maybe he thought that it was appropriate!

March Madness

The lifespan of a basketball in an NBA game is about 10,000 bounces.

Not being one to follow much of basketball, I don't know how long this would be, but I'm guessing not long enough.

Easter Facts

What? Easter has already past and I am doing a post on the facts? Well, yes and no to its passing. What people celebrate on Easter is actually called Pascha; the resurrecting of Jesus from the dead. The pagan celebration of Ishtar (pronounced Easter) in the past battled the celebration of the Christians. Many of the traditional celebration (Easter eggs, bunny rabbits, etc...) come from this. However, the true day of Pascha coincides with Passover. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, we celebrate this day on what is believed to be the day of the true resurrection. This year, it is on April 27th.
Although I am not opposed to the idea of celebrating on Easter Sunday, for me, celebrating on the actual day in a solemn manner reminds me of my true belief. Yes, Jesus' birth was important, and everything else he did while here on Earth; however, with out his Crucifixion, death, and resurrection, we wouldn't have the faith we have today. I like that, usually, we celebrate on a different day than everyone else. Though I enjoy the Easter Sunday festivities (egg hunts, Easter baskets, etc...); it takes away, for me, the true meaning of the day we are supposed to be celebrating.
I don't usually use this blog for personal thoughts; but for this fact it was appropriate. I hope you all had a great Easter and a Holy Pascha.

One or Two

Did you know that no matter what plane the President is on, it's called airforce one? On my adventures, I got to fly back in the snow, well part of the way. It was snowing in Denver when I left so I got to experience the de-icing of a plane. A pretty boring, if not facinating, experience. So of course, I had to find out how it works. Basically, here's how it works:
A crw of people (on really cool cherry picker type trucks) drive around and spray this stuff over the plane. It's a glycol based fluid that is heated that removes any ice that is on the plane already. Then they spray an ice suppressant to prevent more ice from forming. Afterall, if would be pretty silly to get rid of the ice only to let it form again!

Anyway, it was fun watching from the plane window the process.

Snakes have nothing on the hippo

A snake cane open it's mouth an amazing amount to eat a meal, that's pretty common knowledge; but did you know that a hippopotamus can open its mouth so wide that a 4 foot child could fit inside?!?

That's amazing...and a bit scary.

The streets in our towns...

The most popular street name in the USA is.....Second Street!

When I was asked this, I couldn't even begin to guess; then when I heard the answer I was all "Oh, yeah that makes sense." If was publishd in 1893 by Mildren and her sister, Patty Smith Hill, who had written the lyrics.

The song, though published in 1893, was not copyrighted until 1935 after a lawsuit.

Happy Birthday to you brings in about $2 million dollars a year and is one of three most popular songs in the English language (the other 2 being For he's a jolly good fellow and Auld Lang Syne).

Music to your ears

Did you know that a violin contains about 70 different and separate pieces of wood?

Leap into this fact!

Nope, not about a frog today; it's all about this special day! Leap Year Day! February 29th! It only comes around every 4 years (that's not the fact of the day. If you didn't know that then you really need this blog):

Okay, there is a whole mess of reasons why leap year and every other holiday is on the day when it is, and when particular days fall when they do, which all plays into the reason why February 29th is leap year day and somehow this day got put arbitrarily into a month somewhere in the middle of the year...
Well, February used to be the last month of the year, so Julius Caesar proclaimed to have the last day of February every 4th year to be a leap year day. So you see, it was actually tacked on to the end of the year initially. The Achilles is a tendon in the ankle, so named for the legendary Greek Mythology character Achilles whose only vulnerable spot on his body was his ankle. However, the phraseology of this wasn't picked up in the English language until the 19th century. Being used as a metaphor for vulnerability, it's earliest citation is in an essay by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in "The Friend; a literary, moral and political weekly paper" in 1810. A fabulous children's building toy. They are great! I always figured that they were made to represent Abraham Lincoln and were hence names after him. I was wrong! I found out today that they are actually named for the inventor's father! Apparently, they guy who made them's father's middle name was Lincoln. He was with his father as a boy when he saw a building being made using this type of building system. As an adult, he used this memory to make a new building toy and named them after his father as a tribute to him! He did wear dentures made of ivory, lead, animal teeth, human teeth; but never wood.

Abraham Lincoln: He as well had no formal education.
